Chemicals in Cosmetics Might Cause Trouble for Your Kids

Skin being the largest organ in our body, is also the most exposed of all organs. The toll the pollution takes on our skin is very well visible to us, in the form of pigmented, dull, lifeless, wrinkled skin before we hit 30!

The skincare products we use to prevent the aforementioned conditions may do more harm than good, if you are not careful about the chemical ingredients in them.

Skincare for Kids

Until recent times seldom would you have thought of a special regime to children skin care. The boon in the beauty industry has brought about products that were once meant for treatments that were clinically carried out under supervision, easily available in the market.

However it is very important to know exactly what you are using for your children mainly because

  • The tender skins of children absorb lotions and creams applied on their skins very easily.
  • Their skin is thinner and their blood-brain barrier is still developing.
  • Their toxin excretion power is less.

Parabens

Parabens are most widely used preservatives in most of the personal care products to ward off microbial growth. They are mostly seen as methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben and isobutylparaben.

These Parabens have been seen to act as endocrine disruptors; they have been connected to induction of breast cancers and tumors. They also act as reproductive toxins.

Phthalate

Pthalates are basically chemicals used as solvents in most consumer products including personal care products such as soaps, shampoos, hair sprays nail polishes and so on. These chemicals cause problem in the reproductive system when exposed for long time.

Toluene

Toluene again is used to keep the product in liquid form. It is a clear colorless liquid occurring naturally in crude oil. Toluene is harmful to kidneys, nervous system, liver, brain and heart.

Oxybenzone

Oxobenzene is used in some types of cosmetics. It is a well known allergen giving a number of health problems to human beings including cancer, endocrine disruptions, developmental and reproductive toxicity. This chemical is considered to be capable of bioaccumulation meaning it increases in concentration as it travels from lower to higher food chain and hence heinous to human.

Triclosan

Triclosan is an ingredient in many consumer products such as toothpaste, cosmetics, clothing and kitchenware to prevent bacterial contamination. Although on the outset it seems to be harmless, recent studies have shown that this chemical has an effect on hormonal balance.

Sodium lauryl sulphate

SLS is found in many products beginning from your daily use shampoos to your face washes. Studies have shown that SLS causes irritation to skin and eyes, organ toxicity, reproductive toxicity, endocrine disruptions and even possible cancer.

Parfum

Perfumes too have hidden health risks such as causing allergy, asthmas and wheezing.

Petrolatum

Used in many cosmetics and hair shine products petrolatums are natural hydrocarbons, though they seem not to have any harmful effect for adults in small concentrations it is highly harmful if used for children. It clogs pores and makes the skin rough instead of moisturizing.

Advertisements in fact attract us in many ways towards these products by showing cute pictures of babies and colorful words. However it is up to your intellectuality to know exactly who gains and who loses in these deals.
