Dipavali Marunthu – A South Indian Home Precaution to Indigestion

Diwali brings a lot of happiness and variety of foods, home- made or from outside eateries. You sometimes would not be able to say no to some people and end up eating a lot more than you usually would.

This sure could cause indigestion problems.

Well, in South India we make a special homemade medicine for this festive season and it is called DIPAVALI MARUNTHU

It is taken for two to three days prior and after Diwali or till you feel that you need some external help in digestion.

My grandmother had a special recipe for this and made it important for us to take it when there was any festival or functions at home.

You can prepare and store this for a week, it is very tasty too and I get my children eat them like they do their cookies or chocolates!

Diwali Lakshmi Pooja – Vidhi and Mantra

Dipavali Marunthu – Ingredients

Jaggery (powdered)  – ½ cup

Pepper corns             – 2 tbsp

Coriander seeds       – 2 tbsp

Ajwain                         1 tsp

Jeera                           – 1 tbsp

Dry Ginger Powder  – ½ tbsp.

Cardamom                 – 2 nos

Ghee                           – 2 tbsp

Dipavali Marunthu – Preparation Method 1

1.       Wet grind all other ingredients

2.       Boil  Jaggery in half cup water (before attaining the boiling stage make sure to strain the jaggery as soon as it dissolves in water)

3.       When it boils add the ground ingredients in it and keep stirring.

4.       Add Ghee and stir

5.       When the concoction thickens and attains a halwa consistency remove from heat.

Note- the consistency is not a very important issue here, it is to make sure that the marunthu does not get spoilt if stored for long time.

Dipavali Marunthu – Preparation Method 2

Since this is a digestive mixture you can make and store for longer periods. Keeping it handy is actually useful when children complain of stomach disturbances (which often happens these days due to the fast foods)

In this method you can use honey instead of jaggery.

Just dry grind all ingredients given above, sieve it and store it in a air tight container.

When required you can take a spoon of this add it with honey and give to your child.

Ghee is not required.

This home -made recipe is time tested and works great for all the digestive problems one might come across. Try it and tell us your comments.
