These contain chemicals and that is a known factor. However, It is found that nowadays, the mercury content in these lightening is slowly increasing. This mercury is absorbed by the skin and causes many damages. It affects kidney especially.

Retailers have been warned by the Illinois officials to check for mercury content in their skin lightening products. The Environmental Protection Agency says that especially in Chicago area, several mercury-contained products are sold.

They caution the retailers not to sell mercury loaded products, if they do not contain the proper label about the mercury content. They have to mention if they sold the products that are imported cosmetics and that might use unfamiliar names for mercury.

Authorities found high levels of mercury in skin lightening products imported from China, the Domican Republic, India, Mexico and other countries.

The mercury that is used to lighten the skin will be absorbed by the skin and causes rashes, irritations and other skin changes. This absorption of mercury through skin affects the nervous system and kidneys, higher doses may lead to death.

The companies may take it off the shelf now. But, they can repackage it and put it back. Natural alternative only the answer to such problems People used lemons to lighten the skin before.

You can however not use lemon as such. Mix with equal parts of honey or cucumber, you will get a great skin lightener.
